01 / Multilingual DTP

Multilingual DTP.
Every language in its place.

We help your team deliver translated publications that retain the readability, consistency and quality of the original.

From file preparation for localization through multilingual typesetting to checks and export. We can handle the entire DTP scope or support a selected stage of your project.

Multilingual DTP

How we can help

Translation changes the text.
We look after the whole publication.

Longer paragraphs, different fonts, tables and text within illustrations all require layout work. We support project managers and language teams in producing consistent versions of their materials.

PREP

Preparation for translation

We check files, fonts, links and document structure. We prepare materials for your language team and identify text within graphics and elements that require reconstruction.

POST

Post-translation typesetting

We place approved content in the layout, adjusting text frames, line breaks, tables and captions. We account for text expansion and the typographic conventions of the target language.

GRAPHICS

Graphic localization

We recreate non-editable illustrations, diagrams and charts with editable text in PSD (Adobe Photoshop) or AI (Adobe Illustrator). We prepare content for translation in XTM or Trados Studio through a supported exchange format or text export and reimport, depending on the workflow. After translation, we adapt the graphic layout.

QA

Checks and finalization

We check for overset text, consistent styles, working links, images and complete exports. Language queries are agreed with your team; files are delivered in the specified formats.

Localization process

Clear handovers.
Fewer last-minute questions.

Your team handles translation and linguistic approval. KeboDesign manages the technical and visual production. We agree the scope and approval points at the outset.

1Brief and file analysis

Your team

You provide the materials, languages, deadline and delivery requirements.

KeboDesign

We review source files, identify missing assets and prepare a quote. Before starting, we agree the scope, cost and production schedule.

2Preparation and translation

Your team

Your team translates the content, approves terminology and provides the target text.

KeboDesign

We prepare files for localization and flag elements requiring linguistic input.

3Multilingual typesetting

Your team

You answer content queries and approve any necessary changes.

KeboDesign

We adapt layouts, graphics, tables and typography. We check the typeset versions.

4Feedback and final files

Your team

You collect corrections and submit them, for example as PDF comments and annotations in Adobe Acrobat. You confirm linguistic approval.

KeboDesign

We implement agreed corrections from Adobe Acrobat comments, verify them and perform final checks. We deliver finished files in the agreed formats.

Deliverables

What do we hand over to your team?

We select delivery formats to suit the source files and how the publication will be used. Below are examples of deliverables we can prepare for a DTP project.

Publications for print or online use

Ready-to-use PDF versions

Translated layouts, adapted graphics and exports that meet the agreed specification. Separate files for each language.

Print-ready PDF / digital publication PDF
Materials for future updates

Editable source files

Production files and an agreed set of assets that allow work to continue when the content changes.

INDD / IDML · linked graphics
Consistency across the full set

Language version package

A complete set of publications with organized names and delivery structure. Any agreed notes or outstanding approvals are documented at handover.

Language versions · agreed formats · handover notes

Example scope

One brochure. Several language versions.

You have an InDesign project and approved translations. We create the localized layouts, adapt text within graphics and check files before export.

Document and graphic reconstruction

Only have a PDF or scan?
Make your content editable again.

Missing source files do not have to stop localization. We can reconstruct the content and layout of a PDF, scan or image so that your team can translate it and make future updates.

MS Word / DOCX

Simpler documents for translation

We reconstruct letters, instructions and documents with simpler layouts in Microsoft Word. We create editable paragraphs, styles, tables and headings. For scans, we use OCR to recognize text and check it against the source.

Adobe InDesign / INDD / IDML

Complex publications and layouts

We reconstruct brochures, catalogs, reports and multi-column publications in Adobe InDesign. We build page structures, styles and text frames and adapt graphics. An IDML file can then be used for localization in an agreed CAT workflow.

Photoshop / Illustrator

Editable graphics from flat images

We create PSD or AI files with separate text from non-editable graphics. We reconstruct captions, diagrams and layout elements so that each new language version does not require rebuilding the entire illustration.

XTM / Trados Studio

Content ready for translation

We adapt file formats and text handover to your team’s tools. For graphics, we agree an exchange format or text extraction method and insert translations into the production files. We verify the import and export workflow on a sample.

Start with a sample and quote.

Send a few representative pages or graphics. We assess scan legibility, layout complexity and font availability, then establish what can be reconstructed and to what level of fidelity. We propose an editable format, scope, cost and timeline.

Before we start

What helps us plan the work?

  • Source files or a sample document for analysis.
  • Target languages and details of available translations.
  • Fonts, linked graphics and brand guidelines, if available.
  • Required formats, print or publication specifications and deadline.

Send sample files, target languages, required formats and a deadline. We will define the DTP scope and materials needed for a quote.

How to Prepare InDesign Files for Translation?

A well-prepared InDesign project helps translators work with the right content and reduces post-localization corrections. We start by analyzing the materials before preparing files for a CAT tool.
